Description: At age 92 there are not so many âbucket listâ opportunities available to someone whose knees & health are failing. However, with an idea from his son Bill, & the assistance of Erin OâToole, MP Durham, provided Ron with an opportunity to fly âone more time.â Erin contacted Hannu Halminen, President of Halminen Homes, who kindly offered Ron the chance to fly (yesâ¦ fly) his Harvard aircraft out of Oshawa Sunday morning, Aug. 10., With his son Bill, his wife Brenda & Ronâs wife watching his dream became a reality. Ron Peel volunteered to join the RCAF at the age of 18, & because of his navigational skills, he was sent to Bomber Command at Honington (Number 9 Squadron). He completed over 30 tours over Germany in Wellington Bombers, & was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his braver & service in May 1942. In 1943, he was seconded to Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada) & flew Lancastrians. He had the honour of navigating two Royal Flights between Ottawa & London. Ron worked for Air Canada for 39 years; primarily responsible for the ground & simulator training of pilots. He finished his service as an aviation consultant for IATA and ICAO. He was inducted into Canadaâs Aviation Hall of Fame in 1991 for his military & civil aviation accomplishments.
